Certified Home Health Aides : Who Are They and What Do They Do?

If you have an elderly parent who needs daily assistance and you've been considering placement in a nursing or assisted living facility, the services of a certified home health aide may be a great alternative. These services could mean that your parent can stay in the comfort of his or her own home. But what is a certified home health aide?

A certified home health aide is an individual who has completed a 76-hour, nurse supervised training program in order to provide personal care including bathing, dressing, grooming, and medication reminders, as well as the traditional homemaker-type services that include light housekeeping including meal preparation, running errands, and companionship.

The agencies who provide the services of certified home health aides in New Jersey are regulated by the Division of Consumer Affairs. The aides themselves are regulated by the New Jersey Board of Nursing. In addition to the 76-hour training and certification by the State of New Jersey, the certified home health aides who are employed by Garden State ElderCare must also pass a national background check, have verifiable employment history and at least two years of related work experience, undergo competency testing and routine drug testing, and complete a thorough orientation process.

Garden State ElderCare was founded in response to the need for high quality, comprehensive care and services for the elderly. Good home health services provide a quality of life for people that is often missing from other care options.
